Sbragia confirms Magpies bid

Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia has confirmed that Newcastle United made a deadline day enquiry for winger Kieran Richardson.

The 24-year-old England international has scored five times in 42 appearances for the Black Cats since his arrival from Manchester United in the summer of 2007, having been hampered by a number of injury problems.

Sbragia told the Sunderland Echo: "There was a cheeky enquiry, but it was never any more than that.

"To be honest, we've had quite a few cheeky enquiries over the months that never got anywhere near getting off the ground, that was one of them.

"Clubs are entitled to try it on if they want to, but I've made it clear that I want to keep my very best players at the club."
