SB: Cats must get claws into a striker

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has stressed the importance of signing a top striker to replace Kenwyne Jones before the transfer window shuts.[LNB] The Black Cats sold Jones to Premier League rivals Stoke earlier this month for £8million - and their only goals in two games this season have been a Darren Bent penalty and a Stephen Carr own goal.[LNB]On-loan Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck, 19, and Martyn Waghorn, 20, are providing cover to Bent and Fraizer Campbell.[LNB]But Bruce accepts he must find a proven goal-getter to boost the Black Cats' strikepower and compensate for the loss of Jones.[LNB]"It's absolutely paramount that I replace Kenwyne Jones,'' he told the Daily Star. "I've got to do it. We've got a couple of young lads in Danny Welbeck and Martyn Waghorn who will play their part, but they are young boys.[LNB]"I would not want to get to the end of the window without another striker here."[LNB]Bruce's prime target is believed to be Ghanaian World Cup star, Asamoah Gyan.[LNB]The 24-year-old Rennes striker is rated at £12million but Sunderland are yet to meet the French club's valuation.[LNB]"We have one or two irons in the fire, but unfortunately nothing is imminent," Bruce added.
