Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce left after half-time in his final game in charge before becoming England manager as the Black Cats beat Hartlepool.
Press Association Sport understands the 61-year-old will replace Roy Hodgson in the next 24 hours after the Football Association chose him ahead of Hull boss Steve Bruce.
He was in the dugout for the last time as Black Cats boss at Victoria Park to see Jermain Defoe's double and Wahbi Khazri's strike give Sunderland a 3-0 victory.
Ex-West Ham, Bolton and Newcastle boss Allardyce left the ground around 9pm and is expected to be announced as Hodgson's successor by the FA on Thursday, although the Black Cats issued a statement on Wednesday evening stating he was still their manager.
Elsewhere, Manchester City lost 1-0 against Pep Guardiola's former side Bayern Munich after Erdal Ozturk's winner at the Allianz Arena.
Aleksandar Kolarov and goalkeeper Willy Caballero started in an inexperienced side with Yaya Toure, Fabian Delph and Gael Clichy coming on after the break as Vincent Kompany was an unused substitute following a muscle strain which forced him to miss Euro 2016.
Striker Michy Batshuayi made his first appearance for Chelsea as a second-half substitute in their 3-0 win over RZ Pellets WAC.
