Roy's rants and raves - the best Keane quotes

23 April 2009 09:38
Never one to shy away from a confrontation, Roy Keane is often as direct off the pitch as he was on it.[LNB]After taking over at Ipswich, we can again look forward to some rants from the controversial Irishman.[LNB]Here's some of Keane's words of wisdom.[LNB]Vocal: Keane doesn't keep quiet[LNB] On pundits...'I was asked by ITV to do the Celtic versus Manchester United game but I've done it once for Sky and never again. I'd rather go to the dentist. [LNB]'You're sitting there with people like Richard Keys and they're trying to sell something that's not there. [LNB]'Any time I watch a game on television, I have to turn the commentators off. They say "he's playing well" and I'm thinking "no, he's not." [LNB]'My advice to anyone is don't listen to the experts, just watch the game and gather your own opinions.[LNB]'There was a debate about Arsene Wenger on Sky and how crazy is that? People are actually getting interviewed saying he shouldn't be doing this. [LNB]'What that man's done for English football is amazing and will be remembered in 25, 50, 100 years. Will those on telly yesterday be remembered for what they've achieved?None whatsoever. I wouldn't trust them to walk my dog. [LNB]'There are ex-players and ex-referees being given air-time who I wouldn't listen to in a pub.'[LNB]On Rio Ferdinand and under-performing United team-mates...'Just because you are paid £120,000-a-week and play well for 20 minutes against Tottenham, you think you are a superstar. [LNB]'The younger players have been let down by some of the experienced players. They are just not leading. There is a shortage of characters in this team. [LNB]'It seems to be in this club that you have to play badly to be rewarded. Maybe that's what I should do when I come back. Play badly.'[LNB]On United's home support...'Sometimes you wonder, do they understand the game of football? We're 1-0 up, then there are one or two stray passes and they're getting on players' backs. It's just not on. [LNB]'At the end of the day they need to get behind the team. Away from home our fans are fantastic, I'd call them hardcore fans. But at home they have a few drinks and probably the prawn sandwiches, and they don't realise what's going on out on the pitch. [LNB]'I don't think some of the people who come to Old Trafford can spell football, never mind understand it.'[LNB][LNB][LNB] Dutch courage: Former United defender Stam[LNB]On players...'(Former United defender) Jaap Stam's transfer to Lazio illustrates how little power footballers have in the game. [LNB]'Contracts mean nothing. Stam has discovered that, to football clubs, players are just pieces of meat. [LNB]'The harsh realities remain and when a club decide they want to sell there is little you can do once the wheels are in motion.'[LNB] Roy Keane quits as Sunderland boss after 100 games in chargeSportsmail's verdict on the £80m Sunderland transfer record of Roy Keane - the manager who liked to dealRoy's story: The highs and lows of departed KeaneFrom Curbishley to Keane: The losers in the Premier League managerial merry-go-round[LNB]On United's decision to blame ticket price rises on his new £52,000-a-week contract...'I'm not one for holding grudges, but this was a stupid mistake, a bad public relations exercise and something that should never have happened. [LNB]'I'm still waiting for my apology but I could be waiting a long time. The fact is nobody should be singled out in a letter. [LNB]'It wasn't right. I felt everything was being laid at my door.'[LNB]On hypocritical managers...'There are a lot of hypocrites out there in football. Managers saying we've got to respect officials and yet they're being sent off themselves. [LNB]'A manager was talking about respecting referees last week, but he's been sent off himself this year for foul and abusive language. [LNB]'If you rant and rave on the sideline it doesn't reflect well on the club or the team. [LNB]'There's one or two clubs where their staff are a disgrace, an absolute disgrace. Their managers are worse because they stand by and let it happen. [LNB]'There's one club in particular.'[LNB]On WAGS...'These so-called big stars are people we are supposed to be looking up to. Well, they are weak and soft. [LNB]'If they don't want to come because their wife wants to go shopping in London, it's a sad state of affairs. [LNB]'I can understand the attraction of people wanting to go to London - if you are talking about Arsenal, Chelsea or Tottenham. But there are players going to clubs in London simply because it is London. [LNB]'To me, that is wrong. It is not a football move, it is a lifestyle move and those are the type of people you don't want at your club. [LNB]'To me, that player is weak because his wife runs his life.'[LNB] On Jack Warner and releasing Dwight Yorke for international duty (Trinidad & Tobago football chief)....'The man's a clown. He sent me a letter and he was quite happy to give it to the media. I spoke to him and told him what I thought about him and where I think he should go. [LNB]'He is writing these letters and it is always under the FIFA heading just to impress everybody. [LNB]'If he is vice President of FIFA then God help us. People worry about the game and agents and directors of football and managers losing their jobs - we should be worried about people like him.'[LNB]On Sunderland defender Clive Clarke, who suffered a heart attack while on loan at Leicester...'On a night we got beaten in the cup by Luton, the staff came in and said, "Clive Clarke has had a heart attack at Leicester".[LNB]'I said, "Is he OK? I'm shocked they found one, you could never tell by the way he plays".[LNB]'Clarke later goes and does a piece in some newspaper telling the world that I have lost the dressing room. How does he know? He wasn't there! Clown.'[LNB]  Roy Keane quits as Sunderland boss after 100 games in chargeSportsmail's verdict on the £80m Sunderland transfer record of Roy Keane - the manager who liked to dealRoy's story: The highs and lows of departed KeaneFrom Curbishley to Keane: The losers in the Premier League managerial merry-go-round [LNB]
