Richardson extends Cats deal

Sunderland midfielder Kieran Richardson has signed a contract extension to keep him at the Stadium of Light until the summer of 2013.

The 25-year-old England international joined the Black Cats in the summer of 2007 from Manchester United and has since racked up 85 appearances in all competitions.

His current deal was set to run out in 12 months' time, but Richardson has now earned a long-term stay.

Meanwhile, the agent of Ghana defender John Mensah expects his client to return to Sunderland on a second season-long loan from French club Lyon.

Fabien Pivateau told The Journal: "There are negotiations going on at the moment - John has already agreed a deal with Sunderland and there is an agreement in place between the club and player.

"There are other teams who are interested, but with Sunderland everything is arranged and John is happy with that.

"He always said he wanted to go back to England with Sunderland. Now Lyon and Sunderland need to find an agreement, but I think that is close."

Mensah, 27, made 17 appearances in an injury-hit first campaign with the Black Cats.
