Red-faced cheek

Paul Merson tries to make sense of one of the most bizarre goals he has ever seen. Liverpool's season went from bad to worse as they lost 1-0 at Sunderland, their fourth defeat of the campaign to a freak goal. This was one of the bizzarest goals ever seen in football as the ball deflected off a beach ball which had been thrown onto the pitch by the Liverpool fans. "The ball goes down the right and then get's pulled back - everybody misses it and it comes to Bent and he hits the ball. As he goes to hit it Johnson goes to block it and their is a balloon there - a red balloon. It hits the balloon and as it hits the balloon the ball goes completely the other way. Reina goes for the balloon and the ball goes in the net. He has not done anything wrong - he would have saved it no problem. It is laughable." Despite the fluke goal, Paul Merson did believe that Sunderland deserved the win and probably should have scored a few more. "Yes they did deserve the victory," added Paul. "Liverpool did well in the first half but Sunderland would have been devastated if they had not won the game - they had enough of the game. Jordan Henderson came on at half time for George McCartney and he was absolutely outstanding. I have not see him play before but Charlie was saying he was a good player and he was absolutely outstanding." Without Gerrard and Torres, Liverpool were always going to struggle and Paul felt sympathy for Jay Spearing who was making his debut for Liverpool. "I can't see them winning a game without those two playing. I have to say I felt sorry for the lad Spearing in midfield, he did not have a great gnme and got substituted. He should not be thrown into games like that, he should not be making his debut away from home at Sunderland which is a very difficult game with no Gerrard or Torres playing. For me it is not fair and I feel for the kid.
