PREMIER LEAGUE LIVE: Sunderland v Bolton from the Stadium of Light

18 December 2010 14:45
It's all over and the final score is Sunderland 1 Bolton 0 - the Black Cats are in the top six of the top flight for the first time in ten years.[LNB]90+2: The entire population of Bolton is in the area for a long throw that comes to nothing. It's frantic stuff. Seconds left now as Bolton launch it...and Klasnic scuffs it well wide from in front of goal to make it a miserable trip back to snowhell for Bolton [LNB]89min: That should have been it. Zenden sends a header well wide from ten yards when he has time to do far better - great break from the Black Cats though. Seconds later Klasnic completely misses the ball at the other end ten yards out.[LNB]Four minutes of stoppage time to be added.[LNB]85min: Elmander and Cahill have goalbound shots blocked close in then Klasnic has another one killed by Bardsley much to Coyle's chagrin as it rolls to Gordon.[LNB]83min: Good presuure from Bolton without forcing an opening and they make two changes Taylor and Muamba off for Rodrigo and Cohen. Elmander looks sharp but Gordon is not being tested. Bolton, however, are the late goal kings so watch this space...[LNB]74min: Zenden on for Gyan as Sunderland look to press home their advantage. They are on top now and look likely to add a second goal.[LNB]70min: Sunderland miss two great chances to kill the game- Bent allows the ball to bobble away from him ten yards out then Welbeck rolls it wide off the outside of a post when he has a clear shot on target.[LNB]67min: Gyan does an O'Shea, sends a shot from outside the area so off target that it ends up going off for a throw behind him, 40 yards away. O'Shea set the standard for this sort of thing for Manchester United during their 4-0 Carling Cup defeat three weeks ago.   [LNB] Great finish: Danny Welbeck puts Sunderland ahead from six yards[LNB]64min: Muamba yellow card for tripping Onuoha. The bookings are mounting up.[LNB]62min: Petrov off for Klasnic who has now discarded the snood.[LNB]It's all rather scrappy now - no flow the game - so Bolton start to warm a snood up in a bid to get on level terms.[LNB]54min: Yellow card for Holden for challenge on Welbeck . He asks the ref why his tackle deserved it and Cattermole's didn't ... but to no avail.[LNB]There's a touchline war between the managers as Cattermole takes Elmander out at the ankle and escapes even a booking because the ref does not award a free kick. Terrible from Mr Foy there - he knows a free-kick there would have meant a certain yellow card and that would be a red. Coyle starts finger pointing at Bruce who responds with some rasping words, a real clash of the Titans.[LNB]If you were thinking of going to Blackpool v Spurs tomorrow - don't bother - it's just been called off...[LNB]46min: We're off again...[LNB]Half-time: Sunderland 1 Bolton 0[LNB]Sunderland need to get another goal if they want to claim a place in the top five but they will be happy with three points. Their boss Steve Bruce is kicking every ball at the moment - he was a real 100 per cent player, grossly under-rated and somehow uncapped being a key player in an all-conquering Manchester United team.[LNB]Anthing you can do: A bare-chested Bolton fan does his impression of a North-East supporter[LNB]45min: Wonder save from Gordon, Zat Knight prodding the ball towards a near-empty net from five yards only to see the big Scot palm it over the bar. From the corner, Knight heads wide.[LNB]There will be three minutes added time.[LNB]40min: Holden looks like he is going to set up an attack so Cattermole stops him at the expense of yellow card. That's him out of the game with Manchester United... [LNB]This will be a test of Bolton's character now. Are they serious contenders for Europe or just a mid-table team?[LNB]33min: Now that was a tasty challenge - Cahill wipes out Bent from behind, manager Steve Bruce dances onto the pitch in fury - he never made those sort of tackles. Cahill booked.[LNB]31min: Great chance for Gyan superbly saved by Jaaskelainen but within seconds...[LNB]GOAL: Sunderland 1 Bolton 0[LNB]Darren Bent gets in a shot from the left angle, Jaaskelainen parries and Danny Welbeck heads home from six yards on the stoop.[LNB]England's forgotten man Richardson looks in great form down the left for the home side, a constant danger. However, neither team have carved a real decent opening yet despite lots of pretty possession - maybe they've all been watching Arsenal play too much?[LNB] Xmas cheer: Bolton supporters dressed as Santa Claus cheer on their team[LNB]23min: This is not a bad game - Bolton are comfortable on the ball while Sunderland look sharp on the break. You can see why Manchester United are the only team to win here this year.[LNB]20min: Mensah may be back on the pitch but he's nowhere near fit so SUB - he's been replaced by Elmohamady and hobbles off in disgust. More bad luck for Sunderland who seem to be plagued by defensive injuries.[LNB]15min: Now John Mensah has limped off for the Black Cats for a bit of treatment - he looks in a worse state than Bent was and the home side are playing with ten men for the moment.[LNB]Word reaching me that the game of the century Chelsea v Man Utd at Stamford Bridge tomorrow is off - still, that saves all those Chelsea fans travelling down from the north and midlands in this bad weather and the United supporters can close their curtains in Kensington and wrap up Xmas presents. [LNB]CLICK HERE FOR ALL THE POSTPONEMENTS12min: Great break from Richardson down the left, feeds Gyan but Cahill blocks superbly. Corner is cleared and the back-on-the-pitch Bent skies horribly from 12 yards. Blame that ankle Benty...[LNB]10min: Home fans won't like this but Bent is down injured and clutching his left ankle after Gary Cahill trod on it. He goes off for treatment.[LNB] Wide and offside: Asamoah Gyan's effort on goal misses but had already flagged [LNB]8min: Free kick Sunderland, 30 yards and central but Gyan serves up a steamer. Botlon break, Taylor crosses and Davies sees a ten-yard drive blocked. [LNB]7min: The first shot on goal, Petrov's 25-yarder barely making the distance though.[LNB]Sunderland's Lee Cattermole is one booking away from a third suspension this season while Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen has not kept a clean sheet since the opening day of the season.[LNB]Darren Bent has nine goals this season and netted a hat-trick against Bolton last term. He even scored at their place so enjoys meeting the Trotters.[LNB]Anyhow here come the teams on a remarkably snow-free surface given the rest of the UK seems to be under a biblical sheet of white that would make even Ranulph Fiennes opt to stay in bed.[LNB]Come to Sunderland for nice weather? Can things get any more surreal? Yes - because the winners of this Sunderland v Bolton Premier League clash will go fifth in the table.[LNB]That's the way to Europe: Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is hitting heady heights [LNB]Yes. Fifth. On the verge of Champions League qualification, albeit with well over half the season to go - but not a whiff of relegation talk surrounding either club despite recent barren years.[LNB]Sunderland, the team who brought a smile to the face of football with a 3-0 win at not-quite-clinically-dead Chelsea and Bolton, who hammered four past Tottenham just days after they had crushed Inter.[LNB]Bolton, no longer the kick-and-rush merchants they've been portrayed as since the invention of football (around 1992 if Sky are to be believed), but now playing football and getting results under Owen Coyle.[LNB]They will definitely go fifth if they win but Sunderland need a two-goal margin to usurp current incumbents Spurs and keep up their march towards Europe.[LNB]Today's teamsSunderland: Gordon, Onuoha, Ferdinand, Mensah, Bardsley, Henderson, Cattermole, Richardson, Welbeck, Gyan, Bent. Subs: Mignolet, Angeleri, Malbranque, Zenden, Elmohamady, Da Silva, Riveros.Bolton: Jaaskelainen, Ricketts, Cahill, Knight, Robinson, Taylor, Holden, Muamba, Petrov, Elmander, Kevin Davies.
