Poyet still believes in strikeforce

Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet is convinced his strikers will rediscover their touch in front of goal as he attempts to find a way out of their drought.

The Black Cats have failed to find the back of the net in three of their last four Barclays Premier League games and while they have lost only once in six outings to date, have yet to win this season.

Perhaps more worryingly, of their five league goals to date, four have been scored by midfielders and the other was an own goal, meaning frontmen Connor Wickham, Steven Fletcher and Jozy Altidore are yet to register yet.

However, Poyet, who saw team draw 0-0 with Swansea at the Stadium of Light last weekend, believes there is the firepower within the club to prosper, if they can create chances for its strikers.

He said: "I am still calm that the strikers will score. Now, I could be wrong and time will tell, but I think they deserve to have the chance.

"They need to prove themselves, they need to accept the responsibility and then time will tell if was right or wrong. But from here to January, it's us and that's where we need to look for solutions, inside the camp.

"We are okay. It is not that moment when we are panicking. Of course, another 0-0 would not be great and would put us in a situation where we starting asking how we are going to get a goal.

"But the idea is not to panic and go thinking we are going to score a few."

If goals have been in short supply at one end, they have been mercifully so at the other end too with Sunderland having become difficult to beat under the Uruguayan.

Only promoted QPR have emerged from an encounter with the Black Cats with all three points, although Saturday's visitors Stoke got the better of them on Wearside last week in the Capital One Cup third round.

Poyet has made no bones about building his team from the back - indeed, he insists that is the starting point for all but the likes of Real Madrid - and would happily settle for a series of 1-0 victories.

He said: "That's perfection, but any team starts from the back - expect the teams who have got [Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Karim] Benzema, James Rodriguez, [Gareth] Bale and company, then you start from the front.

"But we need to be organised, difficult to beat, fight, have the commitment and then slowly play our game and create chances.

"We did that on Saturday; we didn't score, so the idea is to maintain that and put the ball in the net. That's football.

"Stoke are a difficult team to play against as well, the make it very difficult, and we need to make sure we score first."

Poyet will have central defender Wes Brown at his disposal once again after his recovery from a calf problem, although Sebastian Coates will miss out with a thigh injury and midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini is still struggling to shake off an ankle knock.
