Sunderland have allowed Nyron Nosworthy to return to Championship side Sheffield United on loan for the entire 2010-11 season.
The 29-year-old defender spent the second half of last term on loan with the Blades, featuring in 19 matches for Kevin Blackwell's side.
Nosworthy has made 125 appearances for the Black Cats since arriving on Wearside from Gillingham five years ago but has seen his first-team opportunities become limited at the Stadium of Light since Steve Bruce was made manager.
Blackwell told United's official website: "We made no secret of the fact that we were looking for defenders and that Nyron was a high priority of ours.
"While we were - and still are - monitoring other alternatives, he fits the bill in every way, not least because we know what he can do and he fitted in well last season.
"He is a strong individual with bags of experience and he desperately wants to do well for this club because he knows the potential we have.
"I want a squad that has character and leadership and Nyron, along with Morgan, Cresswell and Montgomery who have all re-signed, brings that to the table."
