No loan deal for Stokes

Sunderland have informed Hibernian they have no intention of allowing striker Anthony Stokes to leave the club on loan. The Irishman has been heavily linked with a year-long switch to SPL side Hibs having failed to ever establish himself at the Stadium of Light. New Hibs boss John Hughes is an admirer of the 20-year-old Dubliner having had him on loan at former club Falkirk - where he scored 16 goals in 18 appearances. Black Cats boss Steve Bruce is only interested in sanctioning a permanent sale for a player who spent spells last season with Sheffield United and Crystal Palace. Stokes, a full Republic of Ireland international, arrived at Sunderland in a £2million switch from Arsenal in January 2007. However, he has managed only five goals in 38 appearances, 22 of them as a substitute, for the Black Cats and found himself behind Kenwyne Jones, Djibril Cisse, Daryl Murphy and David Healy in the pecking order last season.
