Steve Bruce is ready to make Paraguay centre back Paulo da Silva his first signing at Sunderland. The 29-year-old is out of contract at Deportivo Toluca and the Mexican club said yesterday they cannot match the terms he has been offered at the Stadium of Light. The defender is due in Wearside in the next 10 days to tie up a free transfer. Da Silva said: 'I want to thank Deportivo Toluca for giving me the opportunity to fulfil my dream of playing in Europe.' Bruce still hopes to beat Fulham to the signing of Portsmouth's £14m England striker Peter Crouch.
