Murphy extends Cats stay

Republic of Ireland international Daryl Murphy has signed a one-year contract extension with Sunderland that will keep him at the Stadium of Light until 2012.

The 25-year-old, who has scored 14 goals in 90 appearances for the Wearsiders since his arrival at the club from Waterford United three years ago, is delighted with the news.

He told Sunderland's official website: "It's pleasing. I've always wanted to stay here and it's nice to get the extension.

"It's a big club, the supporters are great and we're going in the right direction. It's a different club to the one I joined three years ago."

Meanwhile, Roy Keane insists he wants to add to the six new arrivals at the club this summer.

He said: "We're heading in the right direction. I want plenty of competition - people trying to give me a headache. I'm delighted with the progress we're making.

"I appreciate we have a lot of players, but we're bringing a lot of quality. I also know that we need to let one or two go and we have to wheel and deal ourselves.

"People keep saying I'm signing lots of players, but I don't think I've signed that many - hopefully it's not over yet. I've maybe another two or three more players in mind we hope to make progress with over the next few days.

"We're delighted with the bodies we've got in, but know we need more and I'm hopeful."
