Sunderland striker David Connolly has been forced to have a second operation on his troublesome groin injury.
The 31-year-old Republic of Ireland international has also had surgery on a hip problem since he last played for the Black Cats ten months ago.
Roy Keane confirmed to the club's official website: "David's had another operation and hopefully it will lead to the end of his problems.
"He's been out for some time but we're hopeful he'll be able to resume his career now."
Meanwhile, defender Russell Anderson is continuing his recuperation from a serious knee injury.
The former Aberdeen captain has already been told he will not play again this season after suffering damage to his cruciate ligament while on loan at Burnley.
Keane added: "Russell's back in Scotland at the moment. He's at the stage of his rehab where there's not much he can do physically."
