Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is close to making Lyon defender John Mensah his sixth summer signing.
The 26-year-old Ghanaian is close to agreeing a season-long loan move to the Stadium of Light once he receives his work permit.
Bruce has already signed Fraizer Campbell, Paulo Da Silva, Lorik Cana, Darren Bent and Lee Cattermole during the summer transfer window.
Meanwhile, reports suggest Bruce has rejected a bid from Portsmouth for Nyron Nosworthy, who has also been linked with moves to Stoke City and Ipswich Town.
Danny Collins continues to be on the Potters' wish-list though, with Bruce saying of the likelihood of more transfer activity in the next few days: "It looks set to be very busy few days, you can expect an awful lot to happen."
Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards are also expected to team up with former Black Cats boss Roy Keane at Ipswich while Bruce is also believed to be interested in bringing Hull City centre-half Michael Turner to Wearside.
