McClaren backed for Cats job

Steve McClaren is the early favourite in Sky Bet's next Sunderland manager betting after Martin O'Neill was sacked on Saturday night. O'Neill was relieved of his duties after the Black Cats' 1-0 defeat to Manchester United left them just a single point clear of the drop zone, prompting their relegation odds to be cut from 5/2 to 7/4. Sky Bet opened up their betting on O'Neill's replacement with Paolo Di Canio and Brian McDermott as the joint 8/1 favourites, but significant backing has seen McClaren move to the head of the market, with his price cut from 18/1 to 2/1. Sky Bet's Chris Spicer said: "The majority of the early money has come for McClaren, somewhat surprisingly, and it seems to be the same case across the industry. "However, the size of the stakes do not really imply that it's a done deal and Di Canio has also attracted a fair bit of interest, prompting his price to come in to 5/1."
