McCartney back for Sunderland as Bruce returns to first club Burnley

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has received a boost before Saturday's trip to Burnley with the return of Northern Ireland international George McCartney from injury. The left-back missed last week's win over Hull City after picking up a hamstring strain on international duty but he could now be fit for the visit to Turf Moor. Scotland keeper Craig Gordon is also expected to shake off a thigh problem. Bruce returns to the club who rejected him as a schoolboy this weekend as he looks to build on Sunderland's steady start to the new sesaon. The former Manchester United captain revealed former boss Joe Brown allowed him to leave Burnley as a teenager, but eventually recommended him to Sir Alex Ferguson. Bruce said: `He sacked me, but the funny thing is that he was chief scout at Manchester United and took me to Old Trafford. `I was with Burnley from being 11 to 15 before they said I wouldn't be good enough. I was a kid and all the North East lads seemed to end up there. `I was with them in 1974 when they played in the FA Cup semi-final against Newcastle, but I got turned away by the club in the end. It was a long time ago - no big deal to me now, I was only a kid and I got over it.'
