MAN UNITED 2 SUNDERLAND 2

SUNDERLAND came within seconds of producing the shock of the season as they drew 2-2 at the home of Premier League champions Manchester United. A 92nd-minute own goal from Anton Ferdinand broke Black Cats hearts, with the defender deflecting Patrice Evras shot into his own net. Goals from Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones had looked like securing the Black Cats first win at Old Trafford since 1968, but not for the first time at Old Trafford, there was a stoppage-time sting in the tail. A win would have been deserved, with an inspired Sunderland outplaying a below-par Manchester United for large periods. Bent and Jones offered an attacking threat throughout, while Lee Cattermole and Lorik Cana dominated midfield and both Michael Turner and Anton Ferdinand performed superbly at the heart of defence. The Black Cats started well, with Bent breaking the deadlock in the seventh minute. In front of England boss Fabio Capello, the striker received a pass from Cattermole, turned inside John OShea, and fired a precise low drive into the bottom left-hand corner of the net. The hosts failed to record a single shot on goal in the first half, but they were level six minutes after the break. Craig Gordon saved well from Wayne Rooney, but Ferdinand cleared the ball straight to OShea, and after the full-back crossed, Dimitar Berbatov fashioned a wonderful acrobatic volley that gave Gordon no chance. The goal was somewhat out of the blue, but Sunderland reclaimed the lead in the 58th minute. Andy Reid chipped the ball into the box, and Jones stole ahead of a dreadfully weak Ben Foster to head home. Kieran Richardson received a second yellow card for kicking the ball away and was sent off in the 85th minute, and Ferdinand could hardly be blamed as he deflected Evras shot into his own net in the second minute of stoppage time.
