Sunderland manager Roy Keane has signalled an end to his interest in signing AS Roma's Ghana international centre-back Samuel Kuffour.
The 30-year-old has been on trial with the Black Cats in recent times, but has failed to win a deal with the Wearsiders.
Keane confirmed: "We've had him over and had a look at him, but he's not one that we'll be taking any further.
"You're always looking to strengthen your squad and we'll be looking to bring two or three more in before the transfer deadline, but Sammy Kuffour won't be one of them."
Kuffour made his name during more than a decade with German giants Bayern Munich, winning five league titles and the Champions League, before heading to Italy in the summer of 2005.
He spent last season on loan at Livorno and appears to have no long-term future with Roma.
Meanwhile, Keane is reported to be back in the hunt for Southampton frontman Kenwyne Jones, who is set to leave the Saints before the transfer window closes.
