Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley will miss the last three games of the season after being told he needs surgery on a knee injury.
The former Manchester United right-back suffered the injury earlier this month but it deteriorated in a training session in the build-up to last weekend's Tyne-Wear derby defeat St James' Park.
Black Cats boss Roy Keane told the club's official website: "Bardo's having an operation next week and he won't play again this season.
"It's not a major operation, it's a slight tear he has in his knee and he'll be OK for pre-season."
The 22-year-old has played 11 games for the Wearsiders since moving to the Stadium of Light in January.
