Sunderland boss Roy Keane has released Tommy Miller, Kenny Cunningham, Kevin Smith and William Mocquet following the club's promotion from the Championship.
Meanwhile, loan signings Jonny Evans and Danny Simpson have returned to Manchester United.
The Black Cats have also offered professional contracts to Robbie Weir, David Dowson and Jamie Chandler.
However, academy second-year scholars Chris Backhouse, Lee Chapman and Richard Smith have not been offered professional contracts.
