Jones keen to make amends

Kenwyne Jones is determined to make up for lost time as he contemplates the start of the new Premier League season. This time last year, the 24-year-old Trinidad and Tobago striker was facing months on the sidelines after suffering knee ligament damage in a collision with England keeper David James on international duty. The injury could hardly have come at a worse time for Jones, who had made a huge impact in his first campaign with Sunderland after sealing a £6million switch from Southampton during the summer of 2007. Having sat out the opening two months or so of the last campaign, Jones eventually returned to action in October and finished with 12 goals, although he struggled to recapture his top form. However, that is something he is desperate to address this time around. Jones said: "This time last year I was being prepped for surgery, but I came through that and I came through all the physio and got fit-ish for the rest of the season. I didn't really feel 100% myself until probably the last three weeks of the season, and it was quite difficult to come back after such an injury and then realise how long it would take to get back to, I don't want to say 100% fit, but being yourself. "It was a bit of an experience for me, but I am happy to put that behind me and look forward to an injury-free season."
