Is Cahill Worth The Effort For Only Two Months?
Former Sunderland winger Kevin Kilbane says Tim Cahill will ignite Martin O'Neill's season - if the Black Cats can land the Aussie.
Kevin Kilbane: “Sunderland have struggled to score goals this season and if there’s one thing Tim Cahill does, it’s score goals.
“I remember him stepping up from the Championship with Millwall to join Everton in 2004 and he made a huge impact, finishing as our top scorer with 11 goals in his first season.
“Tim played in an advanced role just behind a lone striker, similar to the role Stephane Sessegnon has played at Sunderland this season, and he provided the link between midfield and attack – I don’t think there are many players better than him at that.
“He isn’t the tallest, but he has got a great leap and is good in the air, as well as being a good finisher.
“If he comes to Sunderland, they will be getting a quality player even if it just for a short period of time.
“Robbie Keane did really well last year when he came to Aston Villa on loan.
“He scored three goals in six games for Villa and helped them stay up, which shows that it is worth signing MLS players even for a few games.
“Tim could make an important contribution at Sunderland.”
After leaving Everton in 2006, Kilbane went on to play for Wigan, Hull City and Coventry, as well as spending loan spells with Huddersfield Town and Derby County.
He is now working in the media after calling time on his playing career with the Sky Blues last month.
