Not content with leading Sunderland towards the Championship, Ricky Sbragia now wants to fill the squad with players of that standard.

The ineffectual manager has told chairman Niall Quinn that Cardiff's Ross  McCormack and Roger Johnson are among his key targets for the summer if he  remains in charge.

It is one thing to get rid of the big time pay-cheque players in the Sunderland squad, but it is completely another to try to fill their places with Premier League rookies.

There is no doubt the team needs an overhaul but, if they only gamble on cheap and cheerful replacements, relegation - if it doesn't come sooner - will certainly come later.
