Sunderland under-18 coach, Craig Liddle, was delighted with his side's character as the young Black Cats defeated West Ham United 2-1 at the Academy of Light.

Craig Liddle: “It’s great for us because we got a bit of a bit of a beating last week and obviously we were playing against another very good side today.

“The big pleasing thing for us is that we stuck together and the team spirit and work rate today was first class that was a big plus for us as well.

“It was our second win out of four since we’ve come back from the Christmas break which is quite productive so we’re happy with that.

“We’ve asked the midfielders to get in the box more and support the strikers.

“For his first goal he got into the box to slot home and then he was brave enough to take the penalty to win it for us.

“Overall I’m delighted for the team because it was a great effort from them.”
