Gordon - Safety not a certainty

Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon has warned his team-mates that they cannot allow standards to slip because there is likely to be more drama in the battle to stay in the Premier League. The Black Cats gave their survival hopes a major shot in the arm at the weekend with a 1-0 win over Hull City, who are sinking like a stone, at the Stadium of Light. Victory moved 15th-placed Sunderland four points clear of the relegation zone and has led some to suggest that Ricky Sbragia's side are set to be a part of the top flight next season. Sunderland also earned the plaudits for pushing Manchester United all the way in a narrow home defeat to the league leaders on 11th April, but Gordon is not getting carried away. Ahead of Saturday's trip to rock-bottom West Brom, the Scotland international told the Newcastle Chronicle: "I'm pleased we managed to get the result for the fans - it was long overdue. "It puts us in a better position going to West Brom and a win there would be brilliant, but I don't know that it will necessarily make us safe. "There have been too many twists and turns this season so it's impossible to make predictions. "But we've come through one game where there was a lot of pressure on us and have to raise our performance again at West Brom. "No team is going to roll over and West Brom have showed that. It will be a different game than Saturday because I expect it will be less physical, and West Brom will look to pass the ball through us. "But we have to concentrate on our own performance and on making sure we play to our potential." After travelling to The Hawthorns, Sunderland face matches against Everton, Bolton, Portsmouth and Chelsea.
