    Goal ends Miller wait

    24 Sep 2007 - 15:01:06

Former Manchester United star Liam Miller was delighted to break his Premier League duck by grabbing a spectacular last-gasp equaliser for Sunderland in Saturday's Tees-Wear derby draw at Middlesbrough.

The 26-year-old Republic of Ireland international came off the substitute's bench to fire home his goal just when it looked as though the Black Cats would be making the short journey home without a point to show for their efforts.

Miller told Sunderland's official website: "We've dug a point from a difficult situation and it was great to get the late goal.

"I never scored a Premier League goal for (Manchester) United so this is my first and it's been a long wait.

"I'd hoped my first [goal] would have come sooner but that's the way things worked out. I'm glad it was an important one."

Boss Roy Keane added: "He's been doing well in training and I thought about playing him.

"I want the players to pick the team and Liam is helping me do that. It's like they're sticking two fingers up at me and saying, 'I should be in the team', I love to see it.

"I always try to give players opportunities and Liam took his. He scored a couple like that in training on Friday and was really pushing for a starting place."
