Fulop buoyed by takeover news

Sunderland keeper Marton Fulop says the club have been lifted by the news that Ellis Short is primed to complete a takeover of the club. The Irish-American businessman is president of Lone Star Funds, which has a controlling stake at the Stadium of Light and helped fund last summer's spending spree. Prior to Sunderland's game against Bolton on Saturday chairman Niall Quinn outlined the future of the club to the team in the dressing room, including news that Short will complete a takeover before the end of the season. Fulop knows what the deal could do for Sunderland and believes the players are now even more determined than ever to keep The Black Cats in the Premier League. "The news we heard before the game is going to be a big step forward for this club," said Fulop. "Of course, it is massive to stay up. If the club was to get relegated, it would lose so much income. "It is vital for every club to stay up, if you want to build for the future. We think this is a very precious point. "If we get a good result at Portsmouth we are nearly there. After the Everton game, it was like a cemetery - we were not at the races - but now it is a much happier place. "We have shown that we have been able to bounce back as a team. We won't celebrate until we are mathematically safe, but we are getting there slowly."
