Even the weather has turned against David Moyes as he attempts to pull Sunderland out of free-fall.
The 53-year-old Black Cats boss endured a difficult night at Southampton on Wednesday when he saw his side beaten 1-0 by the Saints in the EFL Cup fourth round, when a controversial penalty decision cost them a chance to get themselves back into the game.
Moyes was sent to the stands by referee Chris Kavanagh for his protests, but there was worse to come for the Scot when the plane which was due to take he and his players back to the north-east was grounded because of fog.
A club spokesman confirmed that the flight had been cancelled and that the squad had spent the night on the south coast, and completed a recovery session on Thursday morning, before belatedly heading back to Wearside.
Sunderland have won only two of the 12 competitive games they have played since Moyes replaced Sam Allardyce at the helm during the summer, both of them against lower league opposition - Shrewsbury and QPR - in the League Cup.
They have taken just two points from their opening nine Premier League games and sit at the foot of the table five points adrift of safety ahead of second-placed Arsenal's visit to the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
