Sunderland will soon announce losses for the past year but chairman Niall Quinn has assured fans not to be concerned.

New owner Ellis Short funded Steve Bruce's first major spending spree in the summer after converting almost £50million in loans into shares.

Progress: Quinn highlighted Bent as a reason for optimism

Quinn said: 'The accounts will show the word loss but that should really be interpreted as extra signings. We could have shown a profit but we wouldn't have Turner, Bent, Cattermole or Cana. We have a situation now where we have a great chance of going forward.'

Sunderland are trailing Athletic Bilbao midfielder Fran Yeste.
