The Black Cats’ chief scout Pop Robson was sent to run the rule over the Icelandic international this week, and saw the 24-year-old score his 24th goal in 28 games this season as Heerenveen drew 1-1 against Ajax at the Amsterdam Arena on Friday night.
Finnbogason is also being watched by Everton, Aston Villa and West Ham.
