David Healy joins Rangers on one-year deal

ShareDavid Healy was celebrating the fulfilment of a lifetime ambition today after signing a one-year deal with boyhood idols Rangers.[LNB]Northern Ireland's all-time leading goalscorer was desperate to cement a future at Ibrox after Rangers agreed to take over the final six months of his Sunderland contract last January.[LNB]The 31-year old knew he was effectively on trial and responded with a goal on his debut and an impressive overall contribution to Rangers' title run-in.[LNB] Dream come true: Healy, who spent the latter half of last season on loan at Ibrox, has penned a one-year deal at Rangers[LNB]Ally McCoist closely monitored Healy's form, as part of Rangers' coaching team, and had no hesitation offering him new terms after taking over as manager, in the wake of Walter Smith's retirement.[LNB]Healy, who set a scoring record for a European Championship qualifying campaign with 13 goals in 11 group games three years ago, put pen to paper on Thursday morning and is relishing the prospect of a full pre-season with his new team-mates.[LNB]After being taken on initially for the closing months of last season, he underlined his eagerness to secure a full season in the Scottish Premier League by saying:[LNB]'I just hope I can impress the management, supporters and board enough to be able to stay a bit longer. I remember seeing my Northern Ireland team-mates Steve Davis and Kyle Lafferty join Rangers and feeling a bit jealous.[LNB] Happy days: Northern Ireland striker Healy is happy to extend his stay in Glasgow[LNB]'At the back of my mind, I couln't help wishing it was me pulling on the jersey and stepping out on the Ibrox turf. Thankfully, my turn duly arrived, and that was a great moment for me.[LNB]'I had a trial with Rangers when I was 14, but I couldn't sign back then because I was a bit too young. But I'm a Rangers fan, as are all my family.
