Stan Collymore insists Aston Villa will be making a big mistake if they splash £24million on wantaway Sunderland striker Darren Bent. [LNB]Bent handed in a transfer request on Monday and Villa wasted no time in moving for the 26-year-old striker with an enormous bid. [LNB] On the move: Unsettled Bent is set to leave the Stadium of Light this month [LNB]But Collymore, who spent three years at Villa Park, believes his former club should reconsider their position. [LNB]Airing his views: Collymore says Villa should not spend £24m on Bent [LNB]'It just smacks of desperation,' Collymore told talkSPORT. 'As an instinctive striker he gets a solid A, but as an all-round footballer he gets a D. Holding the ball up, his movement, his awareness, that's why to me he would be massively overpriced.'[LNB]Behind Didier Drogba and Wayne Rooney, Bent is the Premier League's third highest goalscorer in the last five years. [LNB]And Villa, who have struggled to find the back of the net this season, are prepared to double the £35,000-a-week wages the England international currently earns on Wearside. [LNB] Collymore however, believes the money would be better invested at the end of the season, providing Villa maintain their position in the top-flight. [LNB] 'January is always a period when one club goes out and does all its money and puts all its eggs in one basket,' Collymore added.[LNB] Thinking time: Houllier is keen to bolster his options with Villa 17th in the table[LNB] 'I think for an extra little bit of thought that there were players out there that could have scored the goals and created the goals for them to stay up and then you take a longer term view at the end of the season.[LNB] 'Being a £20m striker means that you have to be able to score goals but if you're not scoring goals you can drop off, you can get involved in the play, you can draw other defenders in, you can create from wide positions. [LNB]'There's a massive question mark about Darren Bent's ability to fulfil that kind of remit.'
