Clarke adds to Cats' woes

Sunderland's defensive injury crisis has worsened with the news that Clive Clarke will be sidelined for around a month with a groin injury. The left-back, who joined the Black Cats from West Ham United last week, lasted just 20 minutes of his home debut against Plymouth on Saturday before picking up the injury. Clarke's setback is likely to see former Newcastle defender Robbie Elliott make his Sunderland debut against Southend next weekend. Steve Caldwell and Nyron Nosworthy have already been ruled out of the trip to Roots Hall because of respective knee and abdominal problems.
