Cattermole ahead of schedule

Sunderland have been boosted by the news that midfielder Lee Cattermole is set to make a quicker than expected return to action following injury.

The England Under-21 international has returned to full training in recent days following the knee ligament injury he picked in a 1-0 win over Liverpool in mid-October.

Cattermole is likely to make his competitive comeback for the reserves in midweek and could be back in first-team action over the festive period.

"The good news for Sunderland fans is that Lee Cattermole is back in training," manager Steve Bruce told the club's official website.

"We'll see how he progresses over the next couple of days and we might give him 45 minutes against Hartlepool on Wednesday.

"He's worked like a beast to get back."

Cattermole took the plaudits following an impressive start to life with the Black Cats after his £6million summer arrival from Wigan Athletic.
