Sunderland's hopes of signing Diego Forlan appear to have been dashed after Atletico Madrid officials revealed the striker is not interested in a return to England.
The 29-year-old Uruguayan has been strongly linked with the Black Cats where he would be reunited with former Manchester United team-mate and now manager Roy Keane.
But Forlan, who has been a prolific scorer in Spain with first Villarreal and now Atletico, is not keen on a return to the Premier League.
He left Old Trafford for £6million in 2002 having found the net just 17 times in 96 appearances.
Forlan found the net 16 times in 36 outings for Atletico last season in his first year at the Vicente Calderon.
"There have been calls from England but Diego isn't interested," revealed an Atletico official.
"He wants to stay and play in the Champions League."
