Sunderland boss Roy Keane has begun his promised summer snake-up of his squad after telling four experienced campaigners that they are free to leave the club.
Andrew Cole, Ian Harte, Stephen Wright and Stanislav Varga have all been told they will not be offered fresh terms and can leave the Stadium of Light when their current contracts expire at the end of the season.
The quartet made a combined 16 appearances in the Premier League this season, but all spent time on loan in the Championship with various clubs.
Meanwhile, Keane has confirmed he remains in talks with fellow veteran Dwight Yorke over a potential player-coach role next season.
"I've sat down with Andy, Ian, Stephen and Stan and they won't be getting new contracts," he admitted.
"But I would like to put on record my gratitude for their contributions to this club - and I mean that.
"It might not be obvious to the fans how these players have contributed because they haven't made too many appearances between them this season. But they've all helped in their own way and we wish them all the best.
"I don't think it came as too much of a surprise to them but we are grateful for their efforts this season."
