Trevor Carson has signed a new deal with Sunderland that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2012. The goalkeeper is currently third choice behind Craig Gordon and Marton Fulop, and although yet to make his debut the youngster did manage to feature in two pre-season friendlies. The 21-year-old also made the bench on four occasions at the start of the season while Fulop nursed a heel injury. The Northern Ireland Under-21 international spent time out on loan at Chesterfield last year in order to sample first-team football and the shot-stopper is highly rated by Black Cats boss Steve Bruce. "We have seen a huge improvement in Trevor in recent months," Bruce told the club's official website. "He's still very young in goalkeeping terms, but he's brave, a good shot-stopper and has excellent distribution. "He's relishing working with Nigel Spink and being involved with the first-team and the challenge for Trevor now is to be pushing Craig and Marton for a regular place in the first-team squad."
