Sunderland midfielder Lorik Cana has backed his club's bid to sign Lyon defender John Mensah. Former Marseille captain Cana crossed swords with the Ghana star in France last season and was impressed by his ability. Sunderland are closing in on a season-long deal for Mensah, with the option to make the move permanent, and Cana believes the transfer will prove a shrewd signing. "I have played against John a number of times and he has always impressed me," said Cana. "He played for the best team in France so that has to say something and I think he can really help us. Confidence "He is a good player and he can really help us. He is tall, but he is also quick and strong. "He has all the qualities you need to be a successful defender in the Premier League." Meanwhile, Cana insists Sunderland should not dwell on Tuesday's defeat to Chelsea after starting the season with victory at Bolton. He added: "We still have confidence and, as long as we continue to give what we have, we will be OK. "We have a lot of new players and we cannot expect to be 100 per cent from the start."
