Campbell has spent most of the season on the sidelines after damaging his cruciate ligaments last August.
The 23-year-old was due to return in the defeat to Manchester City two weeks ago but his comeback was put on hold after he twisted his knee on the eve of the game.
Despite the setback, it was hoped the striker would feature before the campaign draws to a close, but the Black Cats boss has revealed Campbell will return to see the specialist who operated on his initial injury.
"Frazier is likely to go back and see the specialist who operated on him perviously," Bruce said.
"He'll open up the knee and have a look to see how things are."
