Brucie bonus: Lee Cattermole returns to Sunderland side for clash at Everton

Steve Bruce welcomes back one of the vital components of Sunderland's survival bid tomorrow night.[LNB]Back for Bruce: Sunderland's Lee Cattermole[LNB]Lee Cattermole will be back alongside Lorik Cana at Everton and Bruce is certain the former Wigan and Middlesbrough man will have dramatic impact on the players around him.[LNB]But while the wholehearted midfielder's return to the Sunderland side cannot come a moment too soon for his manager, Bruce is now having to deal with two additional and fresh injuries following the miserable FA Cup defeat at Portsmouth on Saturday.[LNB]Michael Turner, who had only just returned from a four-match ban, and Phil Bardsley are both expected to be ruled out for a fortnight after suffering knee and hamstring injuries at Fratton Park.[LNB]Bruce claims this will be the 14th different back four he has used in his six months at The Stadium of Light when he takes his depressingly under-achieving side to Goodison Park tomorrow night looking for their first away win since the opening day at Bolton.[LNB]What optimism surrounded Bruce and Sunderland that day. Now, with just one win in 12, and dumped out of both cups, which Bruce said he was taking very seriously, the manager is under pressure from unhappy supporters, who are starting to use that dreaded R-word again.[LNB]Bruce of course will have nothing of such pessimism. He is after all, a newcomer to these parts - despite the accent.[LNB]But the Sunderland boss concedes that he and his team are struggling to come to terms with their dreadful run and an abysmal injury list.[LNB]'We have missed certain individuals,' he said at his press conference today. 'I am not making excuses but we need stability and hopefully we can get a platform to build on.[LNB]'The one thing we have to try and do is turn it round. We had a wonderful start to the season but an awful January and December. You can only dust yourself down and we are getting a few back but we have been missing far too many.[LNB]'When that improves, we will improve but we have to do it quickly.'[LNB]The injury to Turner means new signing Matt Kilgallon will come straight into the side following the weekend switch from Sheffield United for his Sunderland debut.[LNB]Sunderland debut: New boy Matthew Kilgallon [LNB]'It looks like we will throw him at the deep end,' Bruce said. `We only got him yesterday and he trained with us for the first time.[LNB]'This is his chance to play in Premier League. We think he is good enough, I have been watching him for a while and he is everything I knew, tall, thin, athletic, left footed and he will give us nice balance when we need it.'[LNB]Bruce meanwhile fired another blow at Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez, virtually closing the door on any move for Kenwyne Jones to Anfield in the next week.[LNB]But he is convinced the Trinidad and Tobago striker has been affected by the speculation surrounding his future, demonstrated, Bruce said, by his performance and input at the weekend.[LNB]When Jones has a bad game, he has a really bad game, and, despite his assertion that Jones is popular with Sunderland supporters, there are few who make the regular away journeys who would say that any business with Liverpool would be bad business. Trouble is, Sunderland have no replacement.[LNB]For the next four months at least, Jones is Bruce's problem and his biggest problem is Jones himself.[LNB]Bruce said: 'It has unsettled him and his performance on Saturday reiterated that and that was my fear with all the speculation. He has had his head turned by the ludicrous notion he will go on loan which is hopefully put to bed.[LNB]'He has to get over it. I have spoken with him and tried to be as honest as I can. We want him leading the attack and being the Kenwyne Jones we know he is. He is not that player at the moment and hopefully he can get it back.[LNB]'There are certain games that him and Benty have won us. I have only worked with him for five months, he has wonderful talent and a wonderful idea of the game but he has to make it repeatedly and make him the Kenwyne Jones we know he can be. May be his focus has not been on playing and it has been elsewhere.[LNB]'We have him for the next six months and we have to see him play the way we know he can because when he plays at that level he is a fantastic footballer. If you are not at 100 per cent in the Premier League you get found out.'[LNB]While Bruce is still hopeful of making `one or two' additions before the closure of the transfer window, Middlesbrough and Newcastle United have been squaring up behind the scenes and Boro boss Gordon Strachan has suffered another blow.[LNB]Middlesbrough have allowed another player to slip through their fingers following the Gary Caldwell fiasco and now Wayne Routledge, who looked on the verge of joining the Teesside club, has decided to make the journey the extra few miles up the A19 to join Newcastle.[LNB]Newcastle boss Chris Hughton is also close to signing Portsmouth defender Mike Williamson and the former Watford defender, who is leaving Fratton Park without a game to his name, is at the club today and is expected to make his debut at home to Crystal Palace tomorrow night.[LNB] Facebook phenomenon to be used by PFA to help keep players out of strifeSunderland boss Bruce admits Jones has been unsettled by Reds interestParaguay star Cabanas shot in the head days after link to Sunderland SUNDERLAND FC
