Relieved Sunderland manager Steve Bruce believes his team need to win only one of their last seven matches to guarantee Premier League football at the Stadium of Light again next season.
Wednesday's impressive 1-1 draw at Aston Villa lifted the Black Cats on to 35 points, 11 clear of the bottom three and also extended their recent unbeaten run to five matches.
Bruce said after the draw: "Will 38 points be enough? I'd think so but the one thing we can't do is take anything for granted.
"Possibly one win will be enough but we've got Liverpool on Saturday, Tottenham next week and then West Ham United in three weeks' time.
"But we have done quite well of late and today we proved it. We've been a bit more settled with our big players being able to play and that's made a difference.
"It's been a tough winter through players missing through injury but we've lost only one of the last nine games, against Arsenal, and we've hit a bit of form.
"We've also become a little bit more resilient."
