Bruce salutes strikers

Steve Bruce hailed the second-half performance of his Sunderland side following the 2-1 victory over Blackburn and in particular the performance of Kenwyne Jones. Jones netted both of Sunderland's goals after Gael Givet had fired Blackburn ahead midway through the first half. Darren Bent had a quieter game but he did score against both Bolton and Chelsea and Bruce is delighted to have two such fearsome forwards at his disposal. "I have always said that the strikers are the most important part of the team and those two are a handful for anybody," he told Sky Sports. "The little bit of quality we showed today was in the front areas and those two have done remarkably well considering they have only been together a week." Jones' opening goal came against the run of play not long before half-time after Blackburn had dominated the early exchanges. Rovers regularly threatened from set-pieces but Bruce was pleased with how his men responded after the interval. "The first half wasn't good enough, a few words were said, and we were much better in the second half," he explained. "It had to be because in the first half we just couldn't cope with Blackburn's physical capabilities."
