Bruce queries Cattermole role
16 Aug 2010 - 10:56:19
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has admitted that he may have made a mistake in making combative midfielder Lee Cattermole his captain this season.
The 22-year-old began the campaign by being sent off in the 2-2 draw with Birmingham City, picking up his fourth red card is just over two seasons with the Black Cats.
Bruce told the Sunderland Echo: "Lee has to learn that because of the type of player he is, people are looking for him now.
"He's always the first one to get booked and that's down to reputation as much as anything else.
"At the moment his reputation is going before him - I think referees are looking for him - and he has to have a little bit more common sense and start thinking about that.
"I don't want to take anything away from him, because I love the way he plays the game. I love his attitude and his competitiveness.
"I gave him the captaincy because I hoped he would grow from it, grow from the responsibility - well, that plan didn't quite work out.
"It was a big call and maybe I got that one wrong, but he's a quality player and an important one for us, a great lad, a great worker for the team."
