Bruce may look to sign Benjani

Sunderland are believed to be ready to step up their interest in Manchester City striker Benjani but West Ham United are no longer keen to sign the Zimbabwe international.

The 31-year-old has only started one Premier League game for City in the last 12 months and is surplus to requirements at Eastlands.

Black Cats boss Steve Bruce is keen to strengthen his striking options as he currently only has Kenwyne Jones, Darren Bent and Fraizer Campbell to choose from.

However, the chances of Bruce completing the signings of Habib Beye and Guy Demel before Monday's transfer deadline are fading.

Demel now looks set to stay with Hamburg while Aston Villa defender Beye's wage demands are believed to be too high.

In addition, long-term target Maynor Figueroa appears set to stay at Wigan Athletic after Latics boss Roberto Martinez described the offers he had received for the Honduras international as "insulting".
