Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is believed to have identified Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck and Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha as two possible arrivals on Wearside before the start of the new Premier League season.
Bruce confirmed on Wednesday that he was hoping to bring at least two new players to the Stadium of Light and reports now suggest Welbeck could be arriving at the club on a season-long loan deal while Onuoha is being linked with a permanent switch.
Bruce currently has Darren Bent, Kenwyne Jones, Fraizer Campbell and Martyn Waghorn as his striking options but is keen to land 19-year-old Welbeck as well.
He scored twice in eight games during a loan spell at Preston last term before a knee injury ended his season.
Bruce has turned his attention towards Onuoha after failing to land Schalke 04's Heiko Westermann.
The 23-year-old former England Under-21 international has played nearly 100 league games for City but is expected to find first-team opportunities extremely limited at Eastlands in the future as the club continues to sign high-profile stars.
Bruce had told Sky Sports earlier in the week: "We've got one or two irons in the fire as far as players are concerned and we've got one bid in right now that we're hoping to make progress on but I'm not going to tell you who that is."
