Bruce has to pick the right way to tame Catt

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce will not risk losing Lee Cattermole's edge by trying to tame him too much. The Black Cats' new skipper collected his second red card of the season at former club Wigan on Saturday as his approach to the game caught up with him once again.Cattermole has made his name with his robust style, and Bruce fears that, while he has contributed to his own downfall with a series of rash challenges, he has been harshly treated by some referees. However, he knows his 22-year-old captain must learn when he can and when he cannot tackle.Bruce explained: "Without that edge, Lee Cattermole is not going to be the player he is. Now, there's a difference between having a competitive edge to you and being reckless and silly."At the moment, maybe he is trying too hard. But he has made five tackles so far this season and he has had four cards. Two of them, I can say `yes' to, but some of the other ones..."There is a little bit of, not a witch-hunt, that's the wrong word, but every tackle he makes, he is being punished, so he has got to guard against that and come through it. There is many a competitive midfield player - and we can name loads of them - who learn from it and get on with the game."
