Bruce grateful for transfer funds
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has praised owner Ellis Short for the financial backing he has given the club. The Irish-American businessman has sanctioned spending of around £31million on new players since completing his takeover at the Stadium of Light, funding the recent arrivals of the likes of Darren Bent, Michael Turner, Lee Cattermole and Fraizer Campbell. However, Short has also impressed upon Bruce and chairman Niall Quinn the need to balance the books, and the club has raked in £19million in sales with Dean Whitehead, Danny Collins, Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards among those to have left. Bruce said: "Since last Christmas, this club has lost something like 21 players and we have added seven; that shows we are getting the squad into a healthier position. "That wouldn't be possible without the owner we have here, who recognises the need to invest in order to improve the football club."
