Bruce "sickened" by Meyler injury

Steve Bruce has labelled David Meyler's injury as the "worst-case scenario" for the midfielder.[LNB] The 20-year-old faces months out after tearing the cruciate ligaments in his right knee and will undergo surgery on Friday to help correct the damage.[LNB] Meyler was injured in what the manager regarded as "an innocuous challenge" during Sunday's defeat to Manchester United. The Republic of Ireland international received oxygen on the pitch before being stretchered off.[LNB] But Bruce reckons Meyler's strength of character will be key to him making a successful return to the squad.[LNB] "Thankfully they do repair these kinds of injuries nowadays," said Bruce, who handed the 20-year-old a five year deal last week.[LNB] "In my day those injuries were career-threatening, but with today's technology he will be back. It will be a long time though. David's a young lad who doesn't deserve an injury like that, but he will get back because of his strength of character. He will bounce back because he's as tough as they come and he'll need that strength of character to get over this."[LNB] "He had a really bad injury in pre-season when he turned his ankle, then he came back and did his other ankle," Bruce added.[LNB] "So while it's been a great season for him in terms of his impact on the team, David's been left with a horrible knee injury. What's happened has sickened everyone. It just goes to show what football can do. David was up on cloud nine after breaking into the team and signing a new contract, and a week later he's injured."[LNB]
