Bruce ready to roll with Gyan

Record signing Asamoah Gyan will make his first start for Sunderland in Tuesday night's Carling Cup third-round clash with West Ham.[LNB] The Ghana international, a £13million-plus summer signing from Rennes, will be included in the starting line-up as manager Steve Bruce attempts to build up his match sharpness.[LNB]Bruce said: "Asamoah Gyan will play because it is the right sort of game for him and he needs as much physical work into him as possible.[LNB]"We will use the cup competition for him to start his first game because he needs the physical work."[LNB]Gyan will be joined by midfielder Bolo Zenden in the team, while Andy Reid and Jack Colback are also in contention.[LNB]However, skipper Lee Cattermole is suspended, while John Mensah (calf) and Michael Turner (ankle) will also miss out.[LNB]Keeper Craig Gordon is a week away from returning to full training after breaking his arm, but striker Fraizer Campbell is starting six months on the sidelines following knee surgery on Friday and David Meyler (also knee) is a long-term casualty.[LNB]Sunderland (from): Mignolet, Carson, Onuoha, Bardsley, Richardson, Ferdinand, McCartney, Angeleri, Bramble, Da Silva, Riveros, Henderson, Malbranque, Elmohamady, Zenden, Colback, Reid, Bent, Gyan, Welbeck.
