Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole is on target for a return from injury a month ahead of schedule.

The England Under-21 star is recovering from a medial knee ligament suffered in last month's win over Liverpool and was originally pencilled in for a New Year return to action.

But Sunderland boss Bruce, who will be without Cattermole and his influential midfield partner and captain Lorik Cana for the weekend trip to Tottenham, says his £6million summer signing from Wigan is improving better than anticipated.

Early comeback: Lee Cattermole could return earlier than expected for Bruce

Bruce said: 'Catts has been out for three weeks already, but, after the Spurs game this weekend, there is another fortnight before we play Arsenal and all of a sudden he has been out for getting on towards five or six weeks.
